The dimensions for both are pretty much the same, with the width of both being 16 inches I love my target cubes! I use the cloth baskets that they sell to fit and just store folded fabric in there, they can hold quite a lot of weight (I also use a cube to store scrapbooking paper - I keep that one in the bottom row!) and seem to hold up well!

You can lay it horizontally as well as vertically, and the top shelf will hold up to 105 pounds if placed horizontally versus 25 pounds if placed vertically. From my experience you won't have a problem with sturdiness with the 1x4, target and ikea use pretty much the same material for their "box" line of furniture (medium density fibreboard and particleboard).
